These graycoats were the only Texans to serve directly under Robert E. Lee in his famous Army of Northern Virginia.

The NAVARRO RIFLES was part of the 4th TEXAS INFANTRY, HOOD'S TEXAS BRIGADE and composed of men from Ellis, Freestone, Hill and Limestone Counties, as well as Navarro County, and these men fought in all 38 of the brigade's engagemnets, and all 6 of the most famous battles of the War Between the States - GAINES'S MILL, SECOND MANASSAS, SHARPSBURG, GETTYSBURG, CHIKAMAUGA and THE WILDERNESS.

During the Battle of Gettysburg, the Navarro Rifles fought as skirmishers for the 4th Texas and was the first Confederates to reach the Devil's Den.

For four years, until there surrender at Appomattox, the Navarro Rifles carried an Enfield rifle and 40 rounds of ammunition. Their uniforms were generally, ragged, and bare feet showed through the soles of the few shoes of the company. Most of the men carried only a thin worn peace of cloth for a blanket, during winter months; but, when the time came to fight, the Navarro Rifles were always ready.

Above Research/Information: From Corsicana To Appomattox, by J.W.
